Solana Beach

Solana Beach, CaliforniaSolana Beach is a small community located between Del Mar and Encinitas, just a short distance away from San Diego. With a population of a little more than 12,000, it combines the best of small town living while still being close enough to major shopping centers, airports and all the other necessities of big city living.

History

Solana Beach was actually called Lockwood Mesa until 1923 when the name was changed. The George H. Jones family is believed to have been the first actual settlers in the area in the late 1800′s, but early residents included Native Americans and Spanish conquistadors. Although they did not found any missions in this partiuclar area, there are several near by.

Lake Hodges Dam was completed in 1918 and at this time the development around Solana Beach began to increase. The beach along the coast was improved through a series of engineering feats, creating a causeway and when it opened, it was the event of the season.

Recent history has cast a spotlight on the little community. In 2003 they became the first city in the United States to ban smoking on all public beaches. This move was soon followed by several other cities in the region.
Within Solana Beach there is a sub community known as Eden Gardens. This area was settled by Mexican farmers in the 1920′s and still exists today. At the time, the workers were employed in nearby Rancho Sante Fe and wanted a peaceful community in which to raise their children.

The biggest expansion of Solana Beach occurred following World War II as more families moved out west to find their fortunes and a little piece of heaven.

Attractions

The Cedros Design District is another popular stop off for many tourists and features more than 85 shops, as well as beautiful gardens and cafes. It is a tranquil oasis offering the best of everything.

Numerous events are held throughout the year and thanks to the temperate climate, outdoor activities can be enjoyed during any season. Harbor seals can be spotted in Fletcher Cove, the developed beach and there are many opportunities to see wildlife throughout the area.

Living Here

With a low crime rate and its close proximity to San Diego, Solana Beach has become a very popular place to live. It’s family friendly and has much to offer. Unlike many bedroom communities, there are plenty of attractions and things to do. It’s central location puts residents within easy driving distance of some of the best beaches, golf courses and shopping in the state.

There are several private and public schools located right in Solana Beach, and universities are located within 30 miles. While the city received some unwelcome attention in 2008 due to a deadly shark attack, the beaches are generally quite safe and there is no cause for concern.
