The climate is quite temperate except during the very hot summer months and there are plenty of things to see and do. While many people who work in the city live in other coastal communities, the city has much to offer its residents and is quickly growing.

In 2006, Money Magazine named San Diego one of the sixth best places to live in this country. As the second largest city in California, and the ninth largest in the United States, it’s clear that the people who call this city home have a good reason to do so.

History

Downtown San Diego SkylineSan Diego proper may have been founded by the Spanish, but residents in this area date back more than 10,000 years. The city is named for Saint Didacus and was first settled in the early 1600′s. As far back as the 1500′s Spanish explorers were scouting the area and setting up settlements near by.

Gaspar de Portola founded Fort Presidio overlooking the bay in 1769 and expansion of the area started in earnest. The Mission there was founded by Father Junipero Serra and quickly grew to one of the largest missions in the country, housing more than 1400 neophytes.

Even part of the Mexican-American war was fought within what is now the city limits at the San Pasqual Valley. This area is incredibly rich in history and there are many attractions that are still standing, even after hundreds of years.

The mission of San Diego is perhaps one of the most popular destinations both from people interested in learning more about this area’s religious history and those fascinated by 1700′s architecture. The San Diego Zoo is another popular destination and there are literally hundreds of aquatic events and attractions to be found here.

The beaches are clean and beautiful, and well maintained, making them very family friendly. Whether you want to do a little fishing, a little surfing or just relax, there is plenty of room available on these peaceful beaches. Qualcomm Stadium is located within the city and is home to some of the states most popular professional sports teams.

Restaurants abound and there is plenty of shopping as well as art galleries and museums. This is a city that can keep you busy no matter what time of year you visit and residents have the rare opportunity to live amidst some of the nation’s most popular attractions. Golf courses are numerous and there are plenty of fun things to do during every season of the year, especially if you enjoy being outdoors.
