History

Rancho Santa Fe at SunsetThe very first settlers in this area date back more than 10,000 years. Native Americans called this region home and there are still amazing artifacts from this time period being discovered today. In 1833, a land grant was given to Juan Osuna that was originally part of San Diego. This grant was the foundation for what would later become Rancho Santa Fe.

Development was slow until the railroad came through in the early 1920′s. As people began discovering this sleepy little community, its popularity quickly grew. Several large ranches were established prior to this and many of the workers decided to stay in the area, even founding their own little community within a community nearby called Eden Gardens.

These ranchers got together to form a planning commission that would oversee the development of the area and ensure that natural resources were protected. In 1989 the community was dedicated as a State Historic Landmark, in a large part thanks to the efforts of the original planners who made sure that the community would maintain its history while still giving residents a beautiful place to live and work.Rancho Santa Fe Ponds
