Oceanside, California

History

The first settlers in Oceanside were Native Americans and their relics date back thousands of years. However, the first explorers reached the area in the late 1700′s during the Spanish exploration of the west coast. Father Junipero Serra founded the Mission de San Luis Rey de Francia here on the San Luis Rey River.

A homesteader named Andrew Jackson Myers moved to the area from Illinois in the early 1800′s and settled the area that is now the town. In fact, his original homesite is where the city hall now stands. Growth happened slowly for Oceanside at first and it remained largely a beach and resort community through much of the 20th century. In the 1970′s however expansion began in earnest and many people who work in San Diego decided to get away from the big city and settle in this lovely town.

Camp Pendleton is also responsible for much of the growth prior to this point. When it was established during World War II, servicepeople and their families flocked to the area and it quickly became a very popular place to visit and to live.
