History

Murrieta, California HomeAlthough Murrieta was not officially named a city until 1991, it’s history dates back hundreds of years. The original inhabitants were Native Americans, and they first settled in the area at least 10,000 years ago. Development was slow and the area was quite unimproved for hundreds of years. In the late 1800′s a man named Esequail Murrieta traveled from his native Spain, landing in this beautiful paradise. It so enchanted him that he gave it his name, promptly bought thousands of acres and moved his family in to settle the region.

By the early 1900′s, the population grew to 800 thanks in a large part to the expansion of the railroad through Southern California. The natural springs were discovered by Murrieta’s family and quickly became a draw with tourists later in the 1900′s. However, fortunes reversed in 1935 when the railroad closed up shop. The growing town quickly stopped growing.

For more than 50 years, development was very limited and less than 2000 people called Murrieta home. That all changed as people began seeking a peaceful community that allowed them to live in a beautiful area while still working in the city.
