Although technically La Jolla, CA is located within the city limits of San Diego, this community enjoys a separate existence. The seven mile long stretch along the beach is home to luxury houses, resorts and some of the most beautiful scenery in the region. Torrey Pines, a rare type of pine tree, line the cliffs, making this a scenic and relaxing spot away from the city. Almost 43,000 residents live within La Jolla, lending a small town atmosphere and a quaint place to either get away from it all or for a permanent change of address.
History
Unlike many towns in this region, it was not founded by conquistadors. Instead, some brothers came north into the region looking for an ideal place to build a pottery. They found it just north of where San Diego is today and immediately settled in to build their pottery. In 1928 they built the pottery along what was then called La Jolla Road leading out of San Diego.
La Jolla Canyon Clay Products Company was formed and employees moved into the surrounding housing with their families. The small community was off to a good start. For more than 20 years the pottery operated successfully. Many of the communities historic landmarks feature tiles that were created right there in that factory. Although much of the family moved on during the 1950′s, the two original founders stayed and lived their lives out within the community.
The pottery was closed but the original wood burning kiln was kept in operation until the 1980′s before that was finally closed as well. Today, the kiln is all that remains of the original pottery.
Attractions
The beaches are probably the most well known attractions in La Jolla, but it is also home to several annual festivals and events that draw crowds from all over the state. Golf is the choice sport in this area and there are several championship level courses right in La Jolla and the surrounding areas. Since the area is so temperate, with an average daily temperature of 70 degrees, you can enjoy a round of golf no matter what time of year.
Scavenger hunts and tours are a favorite among families and there are plenty of events designed for the young and old alike. World class restaurants are situated throughout the city and the art museums and galleries are perfect for those looking to indulge their senses.
Living Here
Since it is so close to San Diego, you’ll be able to take advantage of all that a large city has to offer, while living in a smaller community. Numerous schools, hospitals and shopping centers will still be close by but you will be able to enjoy going home to peace and quiet. La Jolla has much to offer families and while the incomes are higher, there are many different affordable and lovely properties available. Many academics, especially those employed by the Salk Institute and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography call La Jolla home.
