Encinitas is a smaller city located north of San Diego that is made up of five separate community areas. Old Encinitas, which is located right on the beach features a mix of residential homes and businesses. New Encinitas is home to many luxury houses and golf courses, Olivenhain, a more rural community, Leucadia, which features art galleries and gracious historic homes and Cardiff-by-the-Sea which offers oceanside community living as well as one of the best schools in the area.
History
Like many areas in this region, the Spanish conquistadors were the first off shore settlers. The prior residents were mainly Native Americans and the background of the area was first recorded in the mid 1700′s with the coming of the Spanish. Numerous missions were set up in this area and the Franciscans that staffed them worked hard to bring the native people’s into their fold and supported them.
The railroad was set up in the late 1800′s and development of the surrounding communities began in earnest. Many historic buildings remain, including a schoolhouse that was first built in 1883. Visitors and residents enjoy being able to visit these historical reminders of a time not so long ago when life in this region was very simple.
In the mid 1930′s Highway 101 was constructed and this effort brought many new settlers into the area. Many of them were refugees from the Dust Bowl while others were simply looking for a piece of their own California paradise.
