History

Like many areas in this region, the Spanish conquistadors were the first off shore settlers. The prior residents were mainly Native Americans and the background of the area was first recorded in the mid 1700′s with the coming of the Spanish. Numerous missions were set up in this area and the Franciscans that staffed them worked hard to bring the native people’s into their fold and supported them.

The railroad was set up in the late 1800′s and development of the surrounding communities began in earnest. Many historic buildings remain, including a schoolhouse that was first built in 1883. Visitors and residents enjoy being able to visit these historical reminders of a time not so long ago when life in this region was very simple.
In the mid 1930′s Highway 101 was constructed and this effort brought many new settlers into the area. Many of them were refugees from the Dust Bowl while others were simply looking for a piece of their own California paradise.

Attractions

Numerous events take place within Encinitas every year, including The Annual Fall Festival, held in Old Encinitas, The Wavecrest Woodie Meet where thousands of old fashioned woodie station wagons meet every years and the Oktoberfest which draws participants from around the country. The city is home to numerous parks, trails and beaches and is ideal for those who prefer to be surrounded by nature and those enjoy a break from the fast pace of city life.

The San Dieguito Museum is located right in Encinitas as well as the Quail Botanical Gardens, and the LaPaloma theater. This community is well suited for families and there are many different diversions to keep everyone busy no matter what the time of year may be.

Living Here

Approximately 58,000 people call Encinitas home and they are spread out throughout the five main areas of the city. It is located 25 miles north of San Diego and offers a temperate climate, sandy beaches and plenty of sunshine. All five communities were incorporated as Encinitas, but they each have maintained their own separate identity. This city offers the rare ability to enjoy five distinct cities within a city.

The school districts in Encinitas offer a high quality education. There are numerous universities located within a short driving distance as well as community colleges located right in the city limits. With a mix of private and public schools, parents can be assured that their children will have a good education in this historical set of communities, regardless of which one they decide to live in.
