This well known town has an interesting history and many high profile events are held here every year.

History

Del Mar was founded by Colonel Jacob Taylor in 1885. He purchased the land for the town from a man named Enoch Talbert and named it Del Mar which is Spanish for “By the Sea.” The original intent for the338 acres was that it would be turned into an exclusive seaside resort for the wealthy. The original purchase price was $1000.

Taylor wasn’t the only one who found the area attractive. At the same time, a man named Theodore Loop discovered the beautiful beaches when the railroad came through. He and his wife built a tent city right there on the beach.

The Stratford Inn opened in 1921, bringing more tourists to the area but in the late 1920′s the arrival of electricity spurred serious development and the town sprang to life. In 1959 the town’s board and residents decided that it was best to incorporate rather than be included as part of San Diego. Today, nearly 5,000 people call Del Mar home.

Attractions

Every year, the popular San Diego County Fair is held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. This well attended event is always a highlight among locals. The town’s beaches and parks are the main draw for residents and tourists alike and there are plenty of high quality hotels and resorts in the area. The Dog Beach is always well trafficked and the popular Farmer’s Market offers a host of locally grown produce.

The Del Mar Fairgrounds is where the famous Del Mar Racetrack can be found and exciting horse races take place throughout the year. Some of the world’s most popular racehorses such as Seabiscuit raced on this track and it is a favorite among celebrities and those looking to have a good time. Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse races are well attended year round.

Golf courses abound in Del Mar and in the surrounding areas, making it a haven for those who love the sport. The temperate climate means that you can indulge in a round whenever you feel like it, even in the middle of winter.
Del Mar is also renowned for a specific type of pine tree, called the Torrey Pine. It is one of the few places in the world where this type of pine tree can be found. The Soledad Valley right outside of Del Mar is home to thousands of these beautiful pines.

Living Here

San Diego is just a short distance away, making the town popular with those who can commute to work and still enjoy a peaceful ocean lifestyle. Several universities are nearby and the school system in Del Mar is very highly regarded. There are many different events throughout the year and the community is very laid back, making it a very peaceful place to live.
