Carlsbad, CA is a city steeped in history with many exciting attractions and events taking place throughout the year. Located on the scenic coast, Carlsbad features a temperate climate and long, sunny beaches.
History
The Spainards were the first to settle in this area in the mid-1700′s. They reached the now historic city on their way up the Camino Real, and set up camp near an old fishing village. The early residents of this area were mainly Native Americans. In 1798, the mission San Luis Rey was founded and the town began to develop.
In the early 1800′s, Spain lost most of California to Mexico. It wasn’t until 1843 when Juan Maria Romouldo Marron claimed 13,000 acres around the old fishing village that development began in earnest. The rancho was maintained by his family until 1870 when it was finally foreclosed and purchased by a rancher named Francis Hinton, who later left it to his foreman, Robert Kelly. Many of Kelly’s descendents can still be found in the area.
In 1886, two Nebraskans came west with the hopes of opening a luxury spa, modeled after the one they found in Karlsbad Bohemia. When they purchased 275 acres, the logical choice for the name was Carlsbad. The railroad soon blazed into the region and growth of the city began quickly. Following World War I, more settlers came into the region and in 1952 the town of Carlsbad was finally incorporated.

The city features many attractions and thanks to the welcoming climate, you can enjoy most of them year round. The beaches are among the first destination of residents and travelers alike, but the city’s sculpture garden, numerous parks and art galleries offer a chance to get away from it all and enjoy a bit of culture.

The trail system around Carlsbad is extensive and can be used for scenic walks and hikes as well as jogging. Fishing was one of the first main occupations of early residents and you can still enjoy this diversion thanks to the many lagoons in the surrounding area. Legoland is another popular destination for children and tourists.
There are four golf courses located in Carlsbad and they each offer a challenging level of play that is fun for the whole family and for golfers of any skill level. These award winning courses are beautiful to behold and the clubhouses make it easy to relax following a fun round on the links. There are also numerous events held every year ranging from city festivals, music and much more.
